  12. I just got PPI (Practical Peripherals) external modem model PM288MT II V.34
  13. and need to verify your opinions about the modem and the company itself.
  14. I paid $200 in my local CompUSA and expected at least something comparable
  15. to USR 28.8. But this PPI seems to be a nonsense!!!!!!!

  17. The issues here are:
  18.    1. Poor documentation. There are only a few commands listed in the manual
  19.       and basically  I was struggling which commands are undocumented and yet
  20.       included.  No explanation of S register contents.
  21.  
  22.     2. No commands to query modem status.  I tried ATIn where n seems to 
  23.       go up to 5 (the manual does not even mention ATIn)  but the outputs are 
  24.       just  cryptic  hex strings without any explanation. Nothing in the 'manual'.

  26.    3. The 'modem' displays only the fixed speed on the serial port, 
  27.             CONNECT  115,200
  28.      I  was always convinced the modem is supposed to display the connect speed
  29.      on the telephone line. There is no such thing as connect on serial port.
  30.      Are the PPI   'designers' some kind of idiots.

  32.    4. Obviously the modem does not display any protocol indicators.
  33.     I tried AT&A3 which is used by USR. It did not work. and this damn 
  34.     manual does not even mention this issue. I have to check how this
  35.     damn modem connects (V.42bis and others like at least in USR)

  37.    5. This damn manual talks about AT&Fn for F=0 to 3, but only 0 or 1 
  38.     are accepted, the other like 2 or 3 get an ERROR.

  40.    6. This damn modem sometimes gets confused  and even responds 
  41.     ERROR  to  the harmless ATDTnn string.
  42.  
  43.    7. The only other attached 'source of information' seems to be the 
  44.     diskette titled 'Modem User's  Reference' but it does not contain 
  45.     any text files so I am not able to figure out what's there. I will not
  46.     risk installing something from a bunch of idiots who already proved
  47.     ignorance to me.
