- I just got PPI (Practical Peripherals) external modem model PM288MT II V.34
- and need to verify your opinions about the modem and the company itself.
- I paid $200 in my local CompUSA and expected at least something comparable
- to USR 28.8. But this PPI seems to be a nonsense!!!!!!!
-
- The issues here are:
- 1. Poor documentation. There are only a few commands listed in the manual
- and basically I was struggling which commands are undocumented and yet
- included. No explanation of S register contents.
-
- 2. No commands to query modem status. I tried ATIn where n seems to
- go up to 5 (the manual does not even mention ATIn) but the outputs are
- just cryptic hex strings without any explanation. Nothing in the 'manual'.
-
- 3. The 'modem' displays only the fixed speed on the serial port,
- CONNECT 115,200
- I was always convinced the modem is supposed to display the connect speed
- on the telephone line. There is no such thing as connect on serial port.
- Are the PPI 'designers' some kind of idiots.
-
- 4. Obviously the modem does not display any protocol indicators.
- I tried AT&A3 which is used by USR. It did not work. and this damn
- manual does not even mention this issue. I have to check how this
- damn modem connects (V.42bis and others like at least in USR)
-
- 5. This damn manual talks about AT&Fn for F=0 to 3, but only 0 or 1
- are accepted, the other like 2 or 3 get an ERROR.
-
- 6. This damn modem sometimes gets confused and even responds
- ERROR to the harmless ATDTnn string.
-
- 7. The only other attached 'source of information' seems to be the
- diskette titled 'Modem User's Reference' but it does not contain
- any text files so I am not able to figure out what's there. I will not
- risk installing something from a bunch of idiots who already proved
- ignorance to me.
-
-
- Any views? Where the hell this PPI is located??
